What would it look like to create a new church in the Twin Cities that specifically reaches out to the unchurched and dechurched population that makes up the majority of the city? What would it look like to create a church, not just for people who already follow Christ, but also a church for the skeptic, the seeker, the cynic? Our heart is to create a community where Jesus is proclaimed in word and deed, to a city and world that desperately wants and needs to see some good news.
The Twin Cities is one of the youngest metropolitan areas in the country, with nearly 70% of the population under 35 years old and less than 30% of the population attending a Christian church. With younger generations being even less likely to be a part of a church (12%), and with more churches in Minnesota closing than opening, it is clear there is a need in the cities for new churches and approaches to lovingly share the good news and hope of Christ.
It was this passionate vision and these simple statistics that began stirring in the heart of Jeff and Lisa Olson for the people of the Twin Cities, and they began to pray and talk with friends and church leaders about this vision. After a time of discernment, a strong sense of call and the endorsement from their denomination, The Evangelical Covenant Church, neither of these two could be more excited about returning to the area they love to help begin a new church. The Covenant Church has developed a prayerful and effective strategy for church planting (starting a new church), and Jeff and Lisa, along with the rest of the growing Catalyst community, love the contagious spirit that continues to grow and develop at Catalyst as it strives to share the good news of Christ in every way possible.
Jeff is a native of Roseville MN, and both Jeff and Lisa attended Bethel College in the Twin Cities. The team that makes up Catalyst is made up of people young and old; people brand new to church and those who have been in church for years; and is comprised of a diverse group of people from Northeast Minneapolis, Como, Saint Paul, Roseville, New Brighton, Shoreview, Arden Hills and the surrounding regions.
We long for this to be a church where your faith does not stop at you. We hope that our definition of church and faith will not be contained to one hour a week, but will be rooted in deep, authentic community that fosters an ongoing catalytic experience with Christ–one that not only changes you, but every aspect, avenue, moment and person you interact with for the better. We long for our times together to be refreshing, life giving moments to connect with God and our community.
As we continue this adventure that began a little over six years ago, we invite you to join us at any one of our events (typically one or two for fun, and one or two service project(s) a month), worship services or times of study. Beyond our Sunday mornings where you can join us at Saint Anthony Village Central Park at 10 AM, you can check out our “Latest News” page to stay connected. If you have questions, feel free to contact us.
